The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association applauded Ottawa, the United States and Mexico for reaching an agreement on a new free trade deal.

The beef producers’ group is pushing for swift ratification.

It said the deal will allow producers across all three countries to continue to grow and prosper.

President David Haywood-Farmer said the deal is imperative to the economic health of Canadian, American and Mexican farmers and ranchers.

An agriculture group said farming needs to change to help save the climate and the industry.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) said in a report that old-fashioned mixed farming needs to be combined with the latest information technology.

It suggested that’s how agriculture could dramatically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and increase the number and profitability of Canadian farms.

The NFU proposed reducing expensive fertilizers and other inputs by using them more efficiently.

The Prairie Oat Growers Association discussed the important Chinese market at its annual meeting in Winnipeg.

Brennan Turner with FarmLead said China is one of the faster growing markets in terms of oats demand, but the majority of oats China purchases comes from Australia.

Turner expects to see an increase in oat acres in 2020.

The United States Department of Agriculture projected corn production at 13.66 billion bushels, while soybean production is expected at 3.55 billion.

The latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report also left yields unchanged, with the average corn yield pegged at 167 bushels per acre and soybeans at 46.9 bushels per acre.

Updated crop estimates for 2019 will be released in next month’s report and will likely show millions of bushels of grain still unharvested.
