Todd Lewis has been re-elected to a fourth term as president of the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan. Lewis farms at Gray, southeast of Regina, and was first elected president in late 2016.

Ian Boxall of Tisdale and Bill Prybylski of Willowbrook were re-elected as vice presidents.

Fifty-six resolutions were considered during the three-day annual meeting in Regina.

Delegates unanimously approved a motion calling for a federal rebate of carbon tax collected on propane and natural gas used for grain drying.

Canadian Pacific Railway said it moved more Canadian grain and grain products in November 2019 than any month in its history.

CP Rail said it delivered 2.74 million metric tonnes during November, beating the October 2019 all-time record of 2.66 million.

It also said more CP Rail carloads of grain were unloaded at the Port of Thunder Bay during the week of Nov. 18 – 24 than in any prior week.

The railway said its customers’ terminals in Thunder Bay unloaded a record 2,216 cars that week, surpassing the previous weekly record of 2,144 in the fall of 2017.

One of 11 animal rights activists who were arrested after occupying a pig farm east of Montreal on Saturday said her group will continue to push the Quebec and Canadian governments to end industrial pork production.

Cassey Phaneuf and other members of the Montreal branch of Direct Action Everywhere were arrested by Quebec provincial police in St. Hyacinthe after entering the establishment and broadcasting their protest on Facebook.

Police said the activists were released on a promise to appear in court at a later date, with conditions.

David Duval, the president of the province’s pork breeders’ association, said these kinds of protests are stressful for both the pork producers and the animals themselves.

He said Canadian animal welfare standards are among the highest in the world, and accused the protesters of broadcasting images taken out of context.
