A Muenster area farmer will stay on the board of the Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission (SaskBarley) for another term.

Four candidates ran for three positions during the fall election. The successful candidates are incumbent Keith Rueve and newcomers Glenn Wright of Vanscoy and Matt Enns from Rosthern.

They will join current directors Jason Skotheim, Brent Johnson and Allen Kuhlmann.

The directors’ terms will start following the SaskBarley annual general meeting on Jan. 13.

Dave Carey has been named a vice-president of the Canadian Canola Growers Association.

His focus will be on government and industry relations.

He comes to the association after working in the seed industry for more than seven years, including as executive director at the Canadian Seed Trade Association.

Carey has also worked on Parliament Hill as a staffer for several members of parliament.

The association represents more than 43,000 canola farmers on national and international issues, policies and programs that affect farm profitability.

Research is helping improve the pork sector’s understanding of the effects of transport on early weaned piglets.

As part of a Swine Innovation Porc program, piglets being transported in commercial trucks and trailers are being studied to provide scientific information.

That data is being collected in Saskatchewan and Ontario.

Dr. Terri O’Sullivan, an associate professor with the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, said scientists are using various data collecting tools such as accelerometers that measure vibrations on the trailer, heart monitors to collect the piglets’ heart rates during different parts of the transport, video cameras and time lapse photography.
