Agriculture scholarship advances industry

Dec 2, 2019 | 12:33 PM

The 2020 Saskatchewan Agriculture Student Scholarship Program is now accepting applications from students entering an agriculture-related post-secondary program.

Students are invited to submit a three-minute video or 1,000-word essay sharing their food story. One winning scholarship of $4,000 and three runner-up scholarships of $2,000 will be awarded to students in Grade 12 or recent graduates entering agriculture-related post-secondary studies in the new year.

The 2019 scholarship recipient Caylee Dorval of Glaslyn said the award is helping her pursue her passion.

“The scholarship was an opportunity to kick-start my career in the ag industry. I’m excited to continue my education and to learn more about agriculture and food production in Saskatchewan,” Dorval said in a news release.

This award is funded through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year $388 million investment in strategic initiatives by the federal and provincial governments.

Federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said Canada’s youth play a critical role in the continued growth and prosperity of the agriculture sector.

“Our government is proud to support initiatives such as the Saskatchewan Agriculture Student Scholarship that provide young student leaders with the boost they need to succeed in the agriculture sector,” she said.

Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit said the industry offers unique and exciting opportunities for the province’s youth.

“Careers in agriculture are rewarding and challenging as we continue down a path of technological advancement and environmental sustainability,” Marit said.

The deadline for applications is March 1, 2020.
