Alberta MP John Barlow has been named the conservative shadow minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

Barlow most recently served as the shadow minister for employment, workforce development and labour, and previously worked as the associate ag critic during the last term.

Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer unveiled his shadow cabinet Friday.

Alistair MacGregor will be returning as the agriculture critic for the federal New Democrats.

MacGregor, an MP from B.C., is also taking on rural economic development as part of the portfolio.

MacGregor will also serve as the deputy justice critic.

Parliament will resume Thursday, December 5.

G3 and Agriculture in the Classroom Canada are partnering on a new scholarship.

The G3 Grow Beyond Scholarship will be presented for the first time in 2020, to six high school students who are embarking on a post-secondary education and have innovative ideas for agriculture in Canada.

Six scholarships of $4,000 are available to students looking to study in any discipline, and an additional $1,000 will be given to the winners’ high schools.

In order to apply, students must submit a two- to four-minute video essay describing their vision for the future of agriculture in Canada and how they see themselves contributing to the industry.

Applications are due by April 1, 2020. Submissions will be judged by a panel of industry professionals, and the public via online voting.
