Agriculture Roundup for Thursday November 21, 2019

Nov 21, 2019 | 9:56 AM

The makers of the herbicide Roundup are being sued.

It’s alleged Monsanto, and its new owner Bayer, acted with reckless disregard for the safety of Canadians by selling the product.

The World Health Organization classified the active ingredient in Roundup as a probable cause of cancer, but Health Canada has declared it is safe.

Statements of claim have been filed in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.

Farmers have argued they will have a harder time managing weeds in a sustainable and efficient manner without glyphosate, commonly sold as Roundup.

Syngenta Canada has announced it’s discontinuing its cereal seed research and development program as of the end of December.

The company said it will continue to serve the market with its current cereal seed portfolio, recently registered varieties, licensing arrangements, crop protection and seed care.

President Trevor Heck said the company plans to grow overall business in Canada through both its seed and crop protection areas.

Farm Credit Canada (FCC) wants to empower women in agriculture by providing them tools to improve their leadership skills.

FCC Women in Ag Summit is a series of five free events offered across Canada for women who are actively involved in a farm operation and want to learn, connect, be inspired and share their common love for the industry.

The event will include a lineup of high-profile speakers including financial education and coach Vanessa Stockbrugger, management consultant and professional negotiator Anna De Paoli, Toni Newman, professional innovation catalyst, psychologist Dr. Jody Carrington, comedian and author Jessica Holmes, along with emcee Michelle Hillier who is also a movement and dance educator.

The FCC Women in Ag Summit will be in Regina Jan. 28.
