The Western Grain Elevator Association is concerned about how the CN Rail Strike will affect the flow of grain to port in a tough harvest year.

CN services about half the grain terminals in the West.

The association said it fears the strike could lead to lost sales and contract penalties for terminal operators and grain producers.

The federal labour minister urged the rail company and the Teamsters to continue negotiating.

Fertilizer Canada urged both sides of the CN labour dispute to work together to reach an agreement.

President and CEO Garth Whyte said the number one priority for the new federal cabinet is to find a quick resolution to the strike as reliable rail service is critically important to its members and Canadian farmers.

Fertilizer Canada represents the manufacturers, wholesale and retail distributors of nitrogen, phosphate, potash and sulphur fertilizers.

The group is particularly concerned that a strike may result in an embargo on the movement of sensitive fertilizer products like anhydrous ammonia. Whyte said any disruption of the movement of these products may force the shutdown of manufacturing facilities.

Whyte added the government must consider long-term action to prevent future labour disputes in services that are essential to Canada’s economic health and stability.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) celebrates a milestone this month.

Fifty years ago, the NFU held its very first national convention in Winnipeg, Man.

The annual conference will be back in Winnipeg to discuss emerging issues, reflect on the past and set goals for the future.

The event is being held Nov. 24 to 27.
