Agriculture Roundup for Tuesday November 5, 2019

A farm equipment service manager said machinery is being put to the test on the prairies this year as harvest continues to drag on into November.

Ryan Wiebe at Green Valley Equipment recommends keeping fuel conditioner in fuel tanks because summer diesel can gel when it gets cold.

Wiebe said they’ve been hearing about issues with tracks clogging up with mud. He suggested cleaning them as frequently as possible before it freezes up, while the mud is still soft.

He recommends storing machinery inside overnight, if at all possible, to help with startup in the morning.

Wiebe also suggested storing fire extinguishers indoors overnight or in the cab to make sure they work if needed.

The latest United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) crop progress report shows the corn harvest south of the border is 52 per cent complete.

That’s up 11 per cent from last week but still down 25 per cent from the five year average.

Seventy-five per cent of the soybeans have been harvested which is an improvement of 13 per cent from the previous week and also behind the five year average.

Analysts expect the December USDA report will give traders a true reflection of the amount of soybean and corn still in the field.

The world’s leading trade fair for agricultural technology opens this weekend in Hanover, Germany.

Agritechnica is a biannual showcase of the global agricultural engineering industry and a forum for the future of plant production.

The show boasts more than 2,750 exhibitors from 51 countries.

In addition to equipment displays there are forums and workshops on technology trends.

More than 450,000 visitors from 130 countries are expected.

Agritechnica runs Nov. 10 – 16.
