The Canadian Federation of Agriculture is calling on the new Trudeau government to make farm issues a priority.

President Mary Robinson said regardless of political ideology all MPs should appreciate the agriculture sector as a key driver of economic growth.

She said there are many issues that require swift and thoughtful political oversight.

They include trade disruptions in key markets, business risk management tools and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Robinson said the federation also wants the new government to come up with a comprehensive labour program for agriculture and agri-food.

The Western Canadian Wheat Growers anticipates working with all elected parties in the next federal government.

President Gunter Jochum thanked all the political parties for their hard work and said now that the election semantics are over, it’s time to get down to business on high priority agriculture issues.

Saskatchewan Director Cherilyn Jolly-Nagel said the government must acknowledge the impact of a carbon tax on farmers and recognize modern agriculture methods that have been adopted such as carbon sequestering and low-till seeding.

She added these issues need to be resolved or Canada’s agriculture industry will suffer greatly.

Pork producers need to ensure their feed or feed ingredients are coming from credible suppliers.

Those attending the Saskatchewan Pork Industry Symposium next month in Saskatoon will be updated on the latest issues related to the manufacture of feed.

Nutrition Association of Canada Executive Director Melissa Dumont said the first case of African Swine Fever in China raised some eyebrows and research out of the U.S. has spiked conversation among feed manufacturers about what can be done to address the risks.

She said for producers manufacturing their own feed on farms need to know where the ingredients are coming from and what kind of approval programs suppliers have.
