Oct 10, 2019 | 10:04 AM

Registration is now open for the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) winter webinar series.

This year topics will range from feed testing to external parasites and other practical, science-based information for Canadian beef producers.

BCRC webinars are available at no cost as the guest speakers volunteer their time and expertise.

It’s recommended that producers register regardless of whether you can attend during the time listed as a link will be sent to you that will allow you to watch the recording at any time.

Registration is available here.

An associate director of the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Global Institute for Food Security has received an award for his research.

Leon Kochian has won the 2019 Arrell Global Food Innovation Award.

He is recognized for cutting-edge plant root systems research that aims to improve crop yields. His goal is to breed crops with healthier, more efficient root systems that can grow successfully in less fertile soils.

Kochian’s team uses the Canadian Light Source and other state-of-the-art imaging tools to digitize desired crop traits and link them to specific genes in a searchable database. This approach allows for a tailored design and breeding of root systems to specific agro-environments for crops including wheat, barley, lentils and canola.

The award carries a $100,000 cash prize.

4-H Canada will present one of the 2019 Leadership Excellence Awards of Distinction (L.E.A.D.) to a Saskatchewan man.

Douglas Sroka is a member of the Maidstone Gully Multiple 4-H Club and is enrolled in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan with the goal of becoming a Registered Clinical Psychologist.

4-H Canada presents a $20,000 scholarship to four outstanding 4-H members who demonstrate personal development, community impact and leadership excellence.

The recipients also receive an all-expense-paid trip to the 4-H Canada Leadership Awards Feb.10 in Ottawa and ongoing mentorship from an expert in their field of study.

L.E.A.D. is made possible through a partnership with CN Rail.
