Agriculture Roundup for Tuesday October 1, 2019

Oct 1, 2019 | 10:16 AM

The sun is shining this morning which is good news for farmers trying to get back in the field.

The weekend snow is especially unwelcome to farmers as they scramble to finish a harvest delayed by bouts of severe weather.

Environment Canada meteorologist Kyle Fougere said parts of the southern prairies received 25 to 40 centimetres of snow.

In a series of papers published Monday, a team of international researchers downplays the risks of cancer and heart disease linked to red meat.

Their conclusions were swiftly attacked by a group of prominent U.S. scientists who took the unusual step of trying to stop publication until their criticisms were addressed.

The reviews of past studies generally support the ties to cancer, heart disease and other bad health outcomes.

But the authors say the evidence is weak and there’s not much certainty meat is the culprit since other diet and lifestyle factors could be at play.

Manitoba’s premier said his government is going to deal with the impact that recent wet weather has had on crops.

Politicians have returned to the legislature for the first time since the provincial election three weeks ago.

Brian Pallister said the moisture is going to reduce grades and yields, and there will be a need for the government to find ways to assist producers and their families.

He said the legislature will sit for just two weeks, to focus mainly on passing the budget that was introduced in the spring.
