Harvest operations advance thanks to warm weather

Sep 26, 2019 | 12:04 PM

Most producers were able to return to the field over the past week with a stretch of warm and dry weather.

39 per cent of the crop is in the bin, up from 23 per cent last week but well behind the five year average of 62 per cent.

Provincial Crops analyst Shannon Friesen said although progress has been very slow, harvest is well underway.

“Crops are very slow to dry down and we have a lot of green crop left out there as well and so things have just been a lot slower than we would have liked,” Friesen said.

Harvest is most advanced in the southwest region at 58 per cent complete, 46 per cent in the west central, and 40 per cent in the southeast.

In the northeast, 31 per cent has been combined while the northwest is at 23 per cent and east central is at 22 per cent complete.

Friesen said most crops are being dried and aerated due to being damp and tough.

Some places in the east got up to the three or four inches of rain with the Hudson Bay area seeing 75 millimetres. The Ituna and Lipton areas had 94 millimetres.

“Most of the west was dry and the east was a little wetter,” Friesen said.

Strong winds, localized flooding, and hail were responsible for damage that occurred this week.

Freisen is anticipating a very long harvest this year after all of the weather delays and looking ahead to the weekend forecast.

“We are hopeful that October turns around and we are able to get the rest of the crop off but we won’t know when harvest is even expected to finish up until later on,” Friesen said.

With snow in the forecast, Friesen said more delays are inevitable.

“We may have yield loss, all depending how much snow we would get, how heavy it is and how long it takes to melt,” Friesen said.

Farmers are still busy with hauling bales and continuing harvest operations as time and weather permit.
