Farmers can start pulling canola plants looking for symptoms of clubroot.

The clubroot galls start to breakdown after swathing so checking now is the right time.

Growers can have a free soil sample sent in for testing. SaskCanola is covering the cost as part of the provincial clubroot monitoring program.

Kits are available through SaskCanola or at a regional Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Office.

South Korea is culling thousands of pigs after confirming African swine fever at a farm near its border with North Korea, which had an outbreak in May.

South Korea’s agriculture ministry said the country’s first case of the highly contagious disease was confirmed yesterday in tests on five pigs that died at the farm in the city of Paju.

The government has vowed stern quarantine measures to prevent the spread of the disease, which threatens a massive industry that involves 6,000 farms raising more than 11 million pigs.

African swine fever decimated pig herds in China and other Asian countries before reaching Korea.

A global survey has been launched to gather information on gender equality in agriculture.

The survey is open to women and men across all sectors of the agri-food industry.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations said the gender gap in the food and agriculture industry is extensive.

The survey aims to collect feedback about the barriers that impede progress and to identify the resources needed to ensure workplace equality.

The results from the survey will be unveiled at the Women in Food and Agriculture Summit planned for Dec. 3 and 4 in Amsterdam.
