September started off with a general rain that has essentially halted harvest operations.

Hudson Bay had more than 35 millimeters of rain yesterday. Melfort received 18 mm, Prince Albert reported 12 mm while North Battleford received 14 mm.

Lesser amounts were in the Saskatoon area with nine millimeters while Watrous reported five millimeters.

The low pressure system that brought the rain will move out today.

The Verified Beef Production Plus program has a new provincial coordinator.

Erika Stewart of Morse, Sask. was raised on her family’s cow calf operation. She has industry experience through participating in the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders Program and the Young Cattlemen’s Council.

The voluntary program is able to communicate with retailers and consumers how cattle in Canada are being raised in a sustainable and responsible manner.

A United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant will help the pork sector establish a dialogue in Asia aimed at building strategic partnerships to address African Swine Fever.

The USDA Foreign Animal Service division has allocated approximately $1.7 million to start a dialogue with Vietnam to share veterinary knowledge and ways to prevent African Swine Fever from spreading further.

Swine Health Information Center Executive Director Dr. Paul Sundberg said this is an urgent matter and reports will be communicated to pork producers veterinarians and to the U.S. and Canadian industries.

The AgriRisk Initiatives Program is accepting new applications.

The program supports the development of new risk management tools for the agriculture sector.

It will prioritize proposals involving new financial tools and support will be available for the development of risk assessments and educational materials to help producers manage risk.

Eligible applicants will be able to apply for funding through the research and development stream of the program.
