Prairie farm group upset with payout to dairy sector
The Western Canadian Wheat Growers (WCWG) were stunned to see Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau delivered another $1.75 billion to the supply management sector.
This brings the total funding to over $5.75 billion.
WCWG President Gunter Jochum said dairy farmers in Quebec are receiving funding while grain farmers were only offered ways to increase their farm debt through the Advanced Payment Programs.
“It’s a bit of a slap in our face to say the least. I mean, Western Canadian farmers and grain farmers in general are having all kinds of problems getting our grain to market, trade agreements have been broken and nothing is being done in fixing those trade agreements,” Jochum said. “And then we have a government that hands out billions of dollars to one sector of the ag industry. So, it looks like they’re cherry picking. The ag ministers riding is full of dairy farmers. This plays right into her playbook.”
