The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) took action to protect grain producers who have delivered to ILTA Grain Inc.

It’s been a month since ILTA Grain was granted creditor protection by British Columbia’s Supreme Court due to its financial difficulties.

Roughly 200 producers have contacted CGC since the announcement on July 8. Those producers are upset as they had contracts with the company.

CGC Chief Commissioner Patti Miller said one of the key conditions of reinstating ILTA Grain licences is that ILTA is not allowed to purchase grain from producers.

“At the Canadian Grain Commission, we take producer protection seriously. We have taken several steps to protect the rights of producers who have delivered to ILTA Grain Inc.,” Miller said in a news release. “This includes visits by our auditors and inspectors to obtain information and documentation, starting the claims process and negotiating an escrow agreement.”

The Canadian Grain Commission will contact any producers who have reported payment issues.

Canadian farmers have cultivated some sustainable farming techniques that the United Nations’ latest climate change report identified as particularly useful.

One of the options was to increase the organic content in soil by using the land to capture carbon. It’s a practice many farmers use. A key technique for farmers is to no longer till the soil so the organic matter isn’t disturbed and can break down.

No-tillage seeding has grown significantly in the past two decades from use in less than seven per cent of cropland in 1991 to 56 per cent in 2011.

4-H members will have a new way to fundraise.

The organization has announced a partnership with Veseys Seeds were clubs will be able to sign up to sell seeds, bulbs and roots.

Sixty per cent of the retail sales go back to 4-H Canada and over half of that stays with the local club.

This is the first time a national fundraising campaign will benefit local, provincial and national organizations.

Participation for the fall pilot project is limited. Clubs must sign up before September 30.
