Agriculture Roundup for Tuesday August 6, 2019

Aug 6, 2019 | 10:15 AM

Harvest is still weeks away but farmers are already looking ahead to next year.

Between hail damage, high winds, heavy floods and drought, Nick Cornea said his crops near Briercrest, Saskatchewan, have taken a beating.

Cornea, who grows wheat, lentils, canola and flax, said they’re not bumper crops but better than what he thought they would be.

He said the late rain set many crops back a few weeks and high winds dried out much of the top layer of soil, adding more stress to the plants.

He’s hoping for at least two inches of rain to salvage his crops.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture will be conducting disease and insect survey across the province.

The different crops to be surveyed are field peas, lentils, chick peas, soybeans, flax and canola.

Paige Straf, agriculture extension summer student with the ministry, said a large portion of the surveys took place in July in select fields but will continue into August.
