Thousands of hail claims made in Saskatchewan

Jul 31, 2019 | 2:00 PM

Storms that brought hail over the past month have led to a lot of crop damage and hail claims.

From July 6 to 18, pea sized to golf ball sized hail have been reported as well as tennis ball sized hail.

Canadian Crop Hail Association President, Rick Omelchenko said around 2,000 claims have been made in Saskatchewan.

“Claims range from Eston, Abbey, Dinsmore, Outlook, Lumsden, Indian Head, Esterhazy, Kerrobert, Luseland, Biggar, Radisson, Hepburn, Rosetown, Cudworth, Humboldt, Kelvington, Redverse, Torquay, Valmarie, almost everywhere,” Omelchenko said.

The severity of claims also had a wide range but Omelchenko said the Eston area was the hardest hit.

According to Omelchenko’s data, Gravelbourg and Avonlea areas also has areas “where it’s mowed pretty good too.”

The tennis ball sized hail hit the Eston area as well as the Saskatoon area.

Between Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, over 3,200 claims have been made.

“The storms seem to be not very large but really severe in certain areas,” Omelchenko said.

About three quarters of the June claims have been completed and about one quarter of the early July claims have been completed.

“Manitoba has been hit not very hard and Alberta is a lot more active than usual,” Omelchenko said.

Claims in Saskatchewan are near the five year average as of the middle of July.

July and August are typically the high months so it may be above normal if storm activity continues the same way.
