Gathering feedback at Ag in Motion

Jul 18, 2019 | 4:26 PM

Many organizations use farm shows like Ag in Motion (AIM) to listen to producers about concerns they have with day to day operations.

Saskatchewan Crop Insurance CEO Shawn Jaques said he’s been driving a shuttle cart on the grounds and talking to farmers.

“Quite honestly, some of the conversations we’ve had about improvements we’ve made to the programs over the years have come from feedback we’ve gathered from producers at shows like this,” Jaques said.

Producers have been talking about the condition of the crop. Jaques said there is concern about staging.

“Certainly there are some parts of the province that are challenged and some crops maybe don’t look as good as we would hope,” Jaques said. “But that rain in June was very welcomed and we’ve been getting rain recently and that has brought the crops along a little bit later. There’s some optimism now, at least, to get some kind of crop.”

Many areas have received severe weather. Jaques said producers are assessing the damage and trying to decide what to do.

“What I would leave with producers is if they want to put that crop to another use, such as bale it or graze it, they should contact one of our local offices and we’ll send out an adjuster,” Jaques said.

The previously extended greenfeed deadline was on Monday. Jaques said there was interest.

“When we announced the extension of the deadline, it was actually a couple of days later it started raining. So it was a great opportunity for livestock producers that were short on feed to get some in the ground,” Jaques said. “The last number I saw 180 producers took advantage of that program so that’s significant and good for them to get some winter feed.”
