Agriculture Roundup for Monday July 15, 2019

Jul 15, 2019 | 10:09 AM

Saskatchewan’s largest outdoor farm show will kick off this afternoon with an appearance by the federal agriculture minister.

Marie-Claude Bibeau will bring greetings at an Ag In Motion (AIM) reception in Saskatoon.

The event will also feature the AIM official opening and innovation awards as well as comments from the Agricultural Manufacturers of Canada, Saskatoon Regional Economical Development and the provincial government.

Morris Industries CEO Ben Voss will be delivering a keynote presentation and an announcement will be made about the AIM show site.

Ag in Motion, which is located on the south side of Highway 16 near Langham, runs tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The federal government has launched a new three-year immigration pilot project to fill labour shortages in the agri-food sector.

The key areas of focus are labour shortages in meat processing and mushroom production.

The pilot is designed to attract and retain workers by giving them the opportunity to become permanent residents.

Agricultural exports from Canada hit a new record last year reaching $66 billion.

The Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry recommended regulatory changes that maintain Canada’s brand of quality and safety while expanding its reach to international markets. It’s also recommending updates for the Canada Food Inspection Agency and Canada Border Services.

The committee said investing in research and development and using existing mechanisms, including grants, rebates and superclusters, would encourage the launch or growth of businesses that manufacture value-added products.

The value-added food sector takes raw agricultural products, like apples or hemp fibre and transforms them into something else, like cider or cat litter.

Only about half of the food grown in Canada is processed here.
