Farmers are being encouraged to participate in the Harvest Sample program.

Canadian Grain Commissioner Lonny McKague said farmers get valuable information on their crop.

“We will give you an expert opinion on that sample we receive and what it represents in grain commission specifications,” McKague said. “The producer gets those specifications of the sample that he has sent in and can use that as a guide in marketing with grain companies.”

Farmers receive a kit that contains envelopes for sending in samples of their crop.

Samples can be sent as soon as harvest is finished. Results will be available in 15 days.

The boards of the Canadian International Grains Institute and Cereals Canada are exploring a potential merger.

A joint news release from both organizations says the boards are reviewing the potential benefits and synergies from amalgamating the organizations under the governance of a single board of directors and unified management team.

Both boards have met and agreed to sign a letter of intent to pursue amalgamation, with a completion date of March 31, 2020.

Any amalgamation proposal will be subject to approval by votes of the member organizations of both the Grains Institute and Cereals Canada.
