Prince Albert area 4-H Clubs come together to cap off year

It’s the time of year when 4-H Clubs around Saskatchewan come together to auction off their animals as projects wind down.

On Monday evening, the five regional 4-H clubs in the Prince Albert area will be once again auctioning off a steer to raise money for a worthy cause. This year all the money raised from the steer will go to support the new Ronald McDonald House Family Room at the Victoria Hospital.

Robbie Ross, president of the P.A. Exhibition Association said after all the tickets are sold they go into a draw where the winning ticket gets to take home the steer. Ross said in past years the charity auction has gotten interesting, as people have donated the animal back to be auctioned.

“Last year the steer resold three or four times,” he said.

The charity steer is a communal effort involving the five regional clubs in the area, which includes the West Prince Albert Club along with Weldon, Wild Rose, Torch River and Kenwood. All of the clubs pitched in to help raise and take care of the animal.

Along with the charity steer auction, over 80 4-H Club members will be selling off their animals to mark the end of their projects. Ross said from what has seen the club members have done a good job getting their animals ready.

“One of the top groups we’ve had in a while,” he said.

This year marks the 89th year the 4-H auction and sale have taken place. Ross said the P.A. event is one of the biggest in the Western Canada, which he credits to it being a true family affair for many families.

“My grandfather, he hands out the ribbons, this is the 80th show he’s been involved with. Both my parents were involved with it. I am involved with [it] and now we’ve got the next generation that’s involved with it,” he said.
