Canada’s agriculture minister discussed the canola trade dispute with her Chinese counterpart while in Japan for the G20 agriculture ministers’ meeting.

Marie-Claude Bibeau spoke to the media from Japan Monday afternoon about her discussions with Chinese Agriculture Minister Han Changfu.

Bibeau said she is troubled by the lack of evidence for halting Canadian canola shipments.

“Only once provided with evidence will we be able to rectify the situation,” Bibeau said. “Our government continues to stand up for farmers at home and abroad and continue to work toward a resolution of this matter. We are ready to engage in person and hope China will join us.”

“I raised with Minister Han our request for a technical delegation from Canada. I expressed our deep concern with the suspension of canola exports to China and urged that this issue needs to be resolved quickly,” Bibeau said. “I expressed strongly that our government stands firmly behind our robust inspection system.”

While attending the two-day G20 meeting, Bibeau also met with United States Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue where she discussed the Canada, United States and Mexico trade deal.

Bibeau met with Japanese importers in an effort to expand canola shipments and raised concerns with European Union officials about durum exports to Italy. Bibeau also spoke with her counterpart from India about high tariffs on Canadian pulse crops.
