Division 1 farmer ready to follow in father’s footsteps

One of three candidates running for reeve in the upcoming Rural Municipality of Prince Albert byelection, has politics in his blood.

Doug Phelps, the son of former longtime Reeve Charlie Phelps, told paNOW he was approached by several people in the R.M. to run, based on the experience he acquired while growing up.

“They figured I would be a good person to step up to the plate,” he said.

Phelps’ father was involved with municipal politics for 28 years, including three terms as the R.M.’s reeve (1991-1998). He said his values would make him a good person to represent the R.M.

“I think I am very trustworthy and honest, and I just want to see the R.M. run the way it was meant to run, the way the previous reeve kept it balanced,” he said.

When asked if there was any specific issues he would work on once elected, Phelps replied there was none, reiterating he would like to help make the sure the R.M. business was kept organized to run smoothly.

The other two candidates in the byelection are Eric Schmalz and Paul Rybka. The election day is June 12.
