Candidates announced for R.M. of Prince Albert byelection

May 9, 2019 | 9:23 AM

The list of candidates in the upcoming Rural Municipality of Prince Albert byelection includes a former RCMP officer, a former reeve’s son, and the former reeve.

The nomination period closed at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The candidates who submitted their papers are Eric Schmalz, Doug Phelps, and Paul Rybka.

Eric Schmalz is a farmer, business owner and board member of the Prince Albert Exhibition Association. Doug Phelps, who lives in Div. 1, is the son of former Reeve Charlie Phelps.

Former Reeve Paul Rybka resigned last December, after being found guilty of engaging in conduct contrary to the R.M.’s code of ethics. Bylaw 15 dictates a reeve cannot use his position to obtain a private benefit in the form of a loan or line of credit.

The election date is scheduled for June 12, with advance polls on June 8. paNOW plans to reach out to all three candidates for comment on their campaigns.
