Improved cattle prices

Apr 25, 2019 | 3:13 PM

Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices were higher in all weight categories for both steers and heifers.

Provincial Livestock Economist Brad Marceniuk said feeder steer prices were up between $1.50 to $13.52 per hundred weight.

The largest price gains in the last week were in the 300 to 400 pound feeder steer weight category. On average Saskatchewan feeder steer prices increased by over $5 per hundredweight.

Marceniuk said improved U.S. prices pushed up cattle markets in this province.

“We did see higher cattle prices and really it was helped by stronger U.S. cattle markets as cash feeder cattle prices and cash fed cattle prices in the U.S. moved higher,” Marceniuk said. “We also saw stronger basis levels here in Saskatchewan which did help some categories.”

Canfax reported weekly marketings at roughly 12,600 head of cattle sold in Saskatchewan last week up about 200 head from last week.

Marceniuk said market ready cattle prices were also higher.

“We did see slaughter cow prices in Alberta continue to edge higher this week but prices of D2 slaughter cows increased $1.03 to average $91.36 per hundred weight while D3 cows increased $1.04.” Marceniuk said.
