Meeting will update farmers on canola dispute

Apr 23, 2019 | 4:38 PM

The loss of the Chinese market for Canadian canola has left a lot of unanswered questions as farmers head into seeding season.

Prince Albert Conservative MP Randy Hoback will host a public meeting on Friday in Tisdale to provide an update.

Hoback said he will provide a list of the events in chronological order.

“What I’ve done is I’ve put together a timeframe of all the information. When the companies received notice, what actually happened and what the government’s response has been, what has been CFIA’s response and just kind of give them all that information,” Hoback said. “And also a timeline of what we’ve been asking the Liberal government to do and their response to that.”

“All we’re trying to to do is give them as much information that we have and look for advice on how we should be dealing with this moving forward. We still haven`t seen any action out of the federal government,” Hoback said. “They’ve put together this special working group. We see no results from that special working group at all.”

Hoback said there should be serious discussion on the Chinese market itself.

“Because they’re not turning out to be a very dependable marketplace for our product,” he said.

Hoback said the bottom line is this is not about the quality of Canadian canola seed; it`s political.

“It’s an issue that has been created by the Liberal government. It’s basically our farmers who are going to pay for Justin Trudeau’s mistakes,” Hoback said. “I don’t feel that’s right but in the same breath we’re going to have to deal with it one way or the other to make it right somewhere down the road.”

The public meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, April 26 at the Tisdale RecPlex. Attendees are asked to register in advance on Hoback`s Facebook page to make sure there is enough seating.
