Bourgault Industries issues another round of layoff notices

Mar 26, 2019 | 12:47 PM

Bourgault Industries Ltd. has issued layoff notices that will come into effect within a few weeks.

The air seeder manufacturer pointed to deteriorating market conditions in the grain production sector as the reason for laying off nine per cent of its total workforce.

That includes suspending the manufacturing portion of its division in Minot, North Dakota.

In a release posted to its website, the company stated it is experiencing reduced demand for its products due to drought conditions over the south western half of Canada, the northern US plains, Australia, and parts of eastern Europe.

Other factors such as higher fertilizer and input prices for farmers, steel price increases, and softened canola prices are also contributing to the layoffs.

It is unclear at this point on how many staff at the St. Brieux facility received notices.

Back in November, approximately seven per cent of Bourgault’s workforce received layoff notices. No callbacks were expected.

According to the most recent release, if normal market conditions return then higher production levels would be expected.

The company has not returned calls from northeastNOW.
