China stops buying canola

Mar 22, 2019 | 11:00 AM

The Canola Council of Canada (CCC) says Chinese importers are not making any new purchases of canola seed from this country.

CCC President Jim Everson said old contracts are being delivered, but no new sales are being made.

“Importers in China are not purchasing Canadian canola seed at this time,” Everson said. “So it isn’t only related to a single company but to the sale of canola seed to China.”

China stopped buying canola from Richardson International earlier this year, citing concerns about pests. Everson said he is disappointed that the trade issue with China has not been resolved.

“We are working very hard and in concert with the senior levels of the government of Canada to resolve it but we felt that it was important that we indicate and provide an update to the industry on the state of the trade to this important market.” Everson said.

The federal government is still calling it a ‘technical situation, but many farmers and industry observers believe politics is involved with the December arrest of a senior Huawei executive in Vancouver.

Canadian canola seed exports to China were worth $2.7 billion last year. Saskatchewan is Canada’s largest canola producing province.
