Cattle markets lower

Mar 12, 2019 | 2:58 PM

Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices were mixed but showed some downward movement.

In the latest cattle market report, feeder steer prices ranged from $4.51 per hundredweight (cwt) lower and $1.73 per cwt for the week ending Mar. 8.

Provincial livestock economist Brad Marceniuk said the biggest price decline was in the 400 to 500 pound feeder steer category with the largest gains in the 700 to 800 pound category.

Feeder heifer markets were mixed ranging from $2.38 per cwt lower and $3.07 per cwt higher. The biggest price decline was in the 300 to 400 pound category. The largest price gains were in the 800 pound plus categories.

“Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices were, overall, lower last week on weaker basis levels or weaker local demand compared to previous weeks.” Marceniuk said.

Canfax reported that a total of about 12,200 head of cattle were sold in Saskatchewan, down from roughly 18,300 head a week ago, but up from 6,400 head the same week a year ago.

Marceniuk says U.S. markets were showing some upward movement with U.S. beef exports up almost 10 per cent in 2018 compared to the previous year.
