Good year for wheat

It was a fairly good year for wheat production in Saskatchewan.

Scott Hepworth is vice chair of SaskWheat. He said even with the difficult harvest, the quality of the wheat crop was quite good.

"There was a little bit of a tale of two harvests," explained Hepworth. "But in the end, once we reviewed the data, the quality was very good. I think that's a testament to some of the varieties that we're growing these days, they can weather the conditions a little bit better than they have in the past.

Hepworth said he is optimistic about what 2019 holds for wheat producers, with good demand for spring wheat.

"We picked up a lot of exports to China and Japan thanks to a number of things, so there's a really good demand for Canadian wheat out there ... I think we're going to see strong prices, maybe increased prices into the new year."

Hepworth said more consultation is needed on the seed royalty debate in 2019, and he hopes to hear from more farmers on the issue.
