Nov 19, 2018 | 12:41 PM

Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) opened today with the burning of the brand.

Former federal Agriculture Minister and Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame inductee, Gerry Ritz, was given the honour.

CWA president Bruce Holmquist said Ritz has been a strong supporter of the agriculture sector.

“Gerry Ritz has a legacy of opening international markets for Canadian agriculture and being an advocate for local producers around the world,” Holmquist said. “He was also instrumental in bringing the federal government to the table to get the International Trade Centre built, which is the key to the future of Agribition.”

The provincial and federal governments announced a $500,000 investment to support working with international buyers and developing markets.

4-H members take part in the Canadian National 4-H and Youth Judging Competition while 115 students will compete in the Agribition High School Rodeo. CWA will see a record 9,600 school children and teachers participate in the Education Program.

The line-up for Country Thunder 2019 was announced at Agribition. Tim McGraw, Chris Stapleton and Dallas Smith will headline the event at Craven in July. Steve Earle and the Dukes, Lonestar, Travis Tritt, Teri Clark, Gord Bamford, Shawn Austin, Meghan Patrick, the Road Hammers, Jimmie Allen, and the Hunter Brothers will also perform.
