Deadline approaching for crop insurance coverage

Thursday is an important deadline for farmers to apply for crop insurance coverage.

The last day to declare production from the 2018 growing season is Nov. 19 which is also the last day to register a claim with Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC).

The executive director of insurance of SCIC, Darby Warner, said if the deadline is missed there will be a penalty applied.

“If there is still crop remaining in the field, Nov. 15 is also the last day to request an extension of their insurance coverage,” Warner said.

“The way the extension works is you request it before Nov. 15 and if you are accepted, which in all likelihood you will be this year, your coverage gets extended until Jun.10 of next spring, and at that time we would finalize your claim.”

Warner said after the data is collected they will have a better indication how much unharvested crop remains.

“If 99 per cent of the crop has been harvested according to the crop report, if that holds true, that would mean there is approximately 300,000 acres left in the field in the province,” Warner said.
