Harvest wraps up across much of Saskatchewan

Oct 25, 2018 | 2:22 PM

Despite weeks of delay due to bad weather, most producers across Saskatchewan have finally been able to get their crops off the field to finish the 2018 harvest.

In the final crop report of the season, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture said last week’s warm and dry weather helped farmers get most of their crops into the bin. Ninety two per cent of the 2018 was harvested, the ministry said, up from 82 per cent last week, although still behind the five-year average of 94 per cent complete for this time of year.

The report said some producers will still need another week or so of dry weather to finish harvesting.

Harvest continues to be most advanced in the southwest area of the province, where 97 per cent has been combined. The southeast and northeast regions of the province are reporting 95 per cent completion, with the west-central area of Saskatchewan at 90 per cent, while the east-central region is slightly behind at 89 per cent.

Producers in the northwest have made significant progress, the report said, and are now at 82 per cent combined.

Little to no rain was reported across the province last week and topsoil moisture conditions are unchanged. Cropland moisture is rated at two per cent surplus, 65 per cent adequate and 28 per cent short.

Across the province, 96 per cent of barley and mustard, 94 per cent of durum, 92 per cent of spring wheat have now been combined while 90 per cent of canola, 80 per cent of flax and 73 per cent of soybeans are in the bin.
