SaskOrganics hosts local-area field day

A field tour near Richard earlier this week provided a great opportunity to see how organic farmers in that area are helping to meet the demand for organically-grown produce around the world.

SaskOrganics hosted a field day in the Richard area, near North Battleford on Tuesday. The event included site visits to several area farms, networking and discussions on best practices. Marla Carlson, executive director with SaskOrganics says Saskatchewan has 912 certified organic farm operations working on more than one million acres of land.

A high number of Saskatchewan’s organic producers are concentrated in the northwest area of the province, she added.

“We’re in this really great position of having more demand than we have supply, so we’re always looking for farmers who are interested in learning more about organic production,” Carlson told farmnewsNOW. “Five years ago, or even seven years ago, you wouldn’t have seen organic and natural aisles in supermarkets … so there is a shift in consumer demand and farmers are responding to that.”
