Crops enduring tough weather challenges

Jul 12, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Despite some challenges from mother nature this past week, crops across the province are advancing nicely, according to this week’s Crop Report from Saskatchewan Agriculture.

The condition of the majority of crops ranges from fair to excellent. Eighty-one per cent of the fall cereals, 77 per cent of the spring cereals, 75 per cent of the oilseeds and 79 per cent of the pulse crops are at their normal stages of development for this time of year. The majority of crop damage this past week has been attributed to localized flooding and hail. There has also been lack of moisture in the west central and southwest corners of the province.

Livestock producers remain busy haying, but face their own weather challenges with frequent delays due to rain and high humidity.

Insect and disease control are also very important for producers this time of year, who have been busy applying fungicides for diseases such as sclerotinia in canola and fusarium head blight in cereals.
