Farmers take advantage of hot weather

Jun 28, 2018 | 2:00 PM

The recent spell of moisture and heat have been a huge help for farmers, according to this week’s crop report from Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture.

The majority of crops have been reported to be in good condition and at their normal stages of development for this time of year.

Many areas of the province received rain showers this past week, although amounts varied significantly from corner to corner.  In some areas in the southwest, the rain helped replenish top soil moisture. In the northeast region, the majority of rain was recorded in the Bjorkdale and Arborfield areas, while in the northwest region, a few areas reported light rain showers. The Mayfair area received six mm of rain, the Turtleford area 16 mm and the Meadow Lake area 12 mm.

Across the province, quality has been rated as eight per cent excellent, 44 per cent good, 38 per cent fair and 10 per cent poor. Crops, hay and pasture—particularly in the southwestern and west-central regions—are affected by the dry conditions.

As well as starting to cut hay, producers are finishing weed control operations. The majority of crop damage this week was due to lack of moisture. Cutworms are still causing damage in some areas.
