Additional funding has been announced for research into the agriculture biotechnology sector, a growing area of research in Saskatchewan.

Ag-West Bio will receive $1.7 million per year over the next five years, for a total of $8.5 million, the provincial and federal government announced Monday. The funding is part of the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, and will be put toward advocacy, attracting new businesses, networking, and educational events.

Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart told farmnewsNOW there is lots of room for growth in the biotechnology sector and the funding will help support advances in the industry. The agriculture biotechnology research cluster at the University of Saskatchewan attracts world-renowned scientists, he added.

“Ag biosciences has increased the production that we can achieve dramatically across the province,” Stewart said.
