Local youth effort on display at upcoming 4-H Beef Show and Sale

Jun 8, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Youth from around the region will be in Prince Albert in the coming days, putting their hard work to the test at the annual 4-H Beef Show and Sale.

Young people from five area 4-H clubs will take part in the show, happening Sunday and Monday at the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre. More than 80 young people from local 4-H clubs, including West P.A., Shellbrook, Canwood, Weldon and the Nipawin area are participating in the event.

Dale Shillington, one of the organizers of the event, said the young participants spend months taking care of their animals and prepping for the annual sale.

“It shows the young people how to raise livestock, fatten them, get them ready for the meat market, and it shows you how to raise cow-calves to continue in the beef business,” Shillington told farmnewsNOW.

The show starts Sunday at noon. The sale, including the auction of the 2018 Charity Steer, is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Monday. Funds raised through the sale of the Charity Steer will go toward the Rose Garden Hospice, a non-profit organization working to build a medical hospice in the city.

Last year’s Charity Steer auction raised more than $16,000.

The annual 4-H Beef Show and Sale is open to the public.
