Sask. farmers on track for early seeding completion

May 24, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Saskatchewan farmers have made some huge gains in the fields, according to this week’s crop report.

Severty per cent of the provincial crop is now in the ground, up from 35 per cent last week and well ahead of the five-year average of 55 per cent for this time of year.

Farmers in the southeast region are the most advanced at 82 per cent, but farmers in the Prince Albert, Melfort, Shellbrook and North Battlefords areas are not far behind. Some producers have even wrapped up operations while others will need another couple of weeks.

The big challenges farmers face are dry fields and slowly emerging crops. Strong winds, warm temperatures and little rainfall are to blame for slow crop crop development. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on crop land are rated as 47 per cent adequate, 39 per cent short and 14 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 31 per cent adequate, 46 per cent short and 23 per cent very short.

Pastures and hay land remain dry and growth has been slow. Pasture conditions are rated as 22 cent good, 40 per cent fair, 28 per cent poor and 10 per cent very poor.
