Fraudster targets cattle producers

Mar 22, 2018 | 8:00 AM

Saskatchewan cattle producers have been warned by the RCMP to be on the lookout for a buyer who may not be who they say they are.

In recent weeks, cattle producers in Alberta and other parts of the country have been contacted by an individual wanting to buy cattle.

After several emails discussing the details, an authentic looking cheque was sent to the breeder for the cattle. This was then followed by notification that the order had changed and the alleged buyer requested a partial refund to be deposited to a specified bank account.

RCMP have said this is a variation of bogus cheque frauds using a variety of email, telephone and banking schemes all designed to cheat the victim. The RCMP said they are aware of the fraudulent activity and are investigating. It is not known if any Saskatchewan producers have been contacted.
