Beef producers face higher levy

Mar 14, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Canadian beef producers will have to pay a higher fee for each animal they sell this year.

The mandatory levy, known as the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off, is set to increase from one dollar to $2.50 for every head of cattle sold. The funding will go toward marketing and research to protect and grow the Canadian brand, especially in export markets such as Mexico, Japan, China, and the E-U.

Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association CEO Ryder Lee said the change was not a surprise.

“We’ve been talking about this for a few years now, and this is cattle producers investing in research and promotion at the national level,” he said

Lee acknowledged there would be some setback for producers, but said most producers were aware change was coming.

“The last time this levy was increased was when it was set at the dollar in the 1990s, so maybe we haven’t been doing a good enough job keeping up to inflation so you see such a large jump here,” Lee said.

The National Beef Strategy Working Group said the aim is to use the money to increase beef sales in Canada and abroad. The goal is to double the amount of business over the next five years.
