Radisson farmer elected Chair of Sask Wheat

Jan 25, 2018 | 11:00 AM

For the first time in its nearly five year history, the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission has a female chair.

Laura Reiter, who farms near Radisson, was elected on Jan. 12.

“I am very honoured to be elected by the guys on the board of directors and I am very excited about what’s coming up for the year,” she said.

The commission, established in 2013, is a producer led organization that works to help grow the province’s wheat industry. Reiter was first elected to the board of directors in January of 2014 and has for the past two years chaired the research committee.

Reiter said she’s a firm believer in research investment. During her campaigning, she pledged to push for levy dollars to help farmers get a good return on their investment.

“The [Western Grains Research Foundation] has been investing farmer dollars for many years and they’ve got the numbers to back it up so I’m thinking that’s a good place to put dollars,” she said.

Reiter said her first official act of business will be a strategic planning session to develop the 2018-19 business plan

In addition to her work with the Sask Wheat Development Commission, Reiter has served on the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Board and on the board for the Western Applied Research Corporation. She currently operates the family farm with her husband Jack, and brother Bryan in Radisson.
