Cattle and hog futures dropped on Monday as news of the coronavirus caused a selloff in global equities and commodities.

Despite the decline in futures prices, the market fundamentals are still good for both beef and pork.

Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices were mixed last week. Canfax reported just over 12,000 head were sold in the warmer temperatures.

Feeder steers ranged from $2.67 lower to $1.58 per hundredweight higher. The biggest decline was in the 400 to 500 weight steers. The largest price increase was for 900 pound and over steers.

Alberta’s swine disease surveillance program has found porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) but they are calling it a weak environmental positive.

Alberta Pork general manager Darcy Fitzgerald said it means the virus was found on a surface and it doesn’t involve any animals.

Four positive PED cases in pigs were found in Alberta last year. Saskatchewan has managed to stay PED-free to date.

4-H Canada will be honouring a country singer.

Gord Bamford will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award at the 4-H annual leadership conference.

Bamford received 26 Canadian Country Music Association awards, several Juno nominations and two CMA Global Country Artist awards.

Bamford used his success to create opportunities to effect positive change in youth through the Gord Bamford Foundation which generated over $4 million for charities.

Bamford credits his participation in his local 4-H club for his strong sense of committment and speaks highly of the program.

“The 4-H motto, Learn To Do By Doing, has become my own, helping me find a path to success and an even deeper sense of worldly purpose,” Bamford said in a news release.

The award will be presented Feb. 10 in Ottawa.
