The house leader for the federal Conservatives said the Liberal cabinet should be listening to agriculture groups during their meetings in Winnipeg this week.

Candice Bergen said instead of meeting behind closed doors for three days, cabinet members should listen to groups like Keystone Agriculture Producers and the Wheat Growers of Canada to understand the impact of the carbon tax.

Bergen said they should also update canola producers on market access in China and should provide municipalities with clear timelines on when funding for key infrastructure projects will be available.

U.S. President Donald Trump thanked farmers yesterday for supporting him through a trade war with China.

Trump signed a preliminary trade deal with China last week boosting its imports of U.S. manufacturing, energy and farm goods by $200 billion this year and next.

In his address to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s convention, Trump urged farmers to continue supporting him even as they suffered financially in the fallout from his trade war with China and a partial shutdown of the federal government.

Trump also said U.S. farmers will also benefit under USMCA.

The 43rd Manitoba Ag Days kicks off in Brandon this week.

Spokesperson Andrea Guthrie said attendees at the three-day event will get a first-hand look at an autonomous robotic feeder.

The event runs Jan. 21 to 23 and is free.

The kick-off includes a fundraiser breakfast for the Children’s Nutrition Council of Manitoba, which works with school divisions throughout the province to make sure students are properly nourished.
