Harvest Sample Program

Early numbers from harvest sample program

Oct 21, 2019 | 5:03 PM

The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) has released preliminary data from its Harvest Sample Program.

Program Manager Daryl Beswetherick said CGC continues to receive samples as many farmers haven’t harvested all of their wheat yet.

“The numbers still looks good with the top two grades at 72 per cent, but we anticipate that those are going to go down as some of the later harvest comes off,” Beswetherick told farmnewsNOW. “They are seeing sprouting as one of the predominant grading factors along with mildew. Both are moisture-related.”

Beswetherick said early testing on canola is encouraging.

“Canola has looked well. There are definitely some samples that have some sprouting activity but it’s not that common so the vast majority are grading number one. There’s not a lot of distinctly green or chlorophyl issues with the canola this year just because it`s been left out for so long. So far the canola has been looking really good,” Beswetherick said. “There is a lot of canola to be taken off as producers have theft it out in the field as it weathers better then other crops. We’re just waiting and grading samples as they come in and we`ll make our full evaluation once harvest is complete.”

Beswetherick added he expects to see roughly 10,000 samples this fall. He said there is still time to do that with the Nov. 30 deadline to submit samples to the grain commission.

“We encourage producers to send in their samples and get the information that they need for marketing their crop. Falling number is something producers can receive for wheat samples. I think that`s going to be important for them to know,” Beswetherick said.
