Saying thank you to farmers and ranchers is the plan for the annual Steaks and Stems producer appreciation nights.

The events will be held next month in Tisdale, Prince Albert and North Battleford.

Along with supper there will be a keynote speaker. Cherilyn Nagel will discuss the importance of public trust within the agriculture industry.

A global effort is helping the swine sector become more responsive to the threat of disease.

In order to contain the spread of diseases, the Swine Health Information Center is tracking diseases both domestically and globally through official government sources and through a network of contacts on the ground.

Swine Health Information Center Executive Director Dr. Paul Sundberg said one of the more rewarding aspects of the initiative has been the level of cooperation.

He said the objective is to help understand what the disease risks are and how to prevent them. If they can’t be prevented, the plan is to develop a strategy to effectively respond.

A mailer sent to businesses across Western Canada encouraging them to move to Texas might be appealing to some in the agriculture sector.

Krisjan Jones is the operations manager at livestock feed supplement maker Canadian Bio-Systems.

He said Lubbock’s economic development agency recently made an enticing pitch to move his business to the state. It was offering land at no cost with utilities and rail access.

The mailer from Arrowstar Realty said there are tax incentives and ranch-style properties, and it offers to link prospective clients with banks, accountants and lawyers to ease a move.

Jones said he’s waiting on the outcome of the federal election before pulling the trigger, citing the federal carbon tax as a major issue for him.
