The Canadian Meat Council (CMC) said suspended shipments of beef and pork to China have cost almost $100 million since they were imposed June 25.

CMC said the federal government should explain how it intends to remedy the situation as well as create more export options.

It said China’s concerns about Canadian products are rooted in politics not quality.

CMC added producers will expect to be compensated for their losses as a result of the Chinese moves.

Motorists and farmers are reminded to keep safety a top priority during harvest.

More farm machinery and heavy trucks are moving around on Saskatchewan roads.

Drivers are being asked to take extra precautions when passing slow-moving farm equipment and to be respectful of other drivers.

Producers need to ensure lights are working and adjusted before moving equipment on highways and to regularly inspect and maintain their equipment.

They should also know all height, length and weight restrictions on their farm vehicles and when permits may be required.

The Ministry of Agriculture is seeking research proposals for the production, management and sustainability of the province’s beef industry, pasture and rangeland resources.

The goal of the 2019 Strategic Research Initiative is to gather and coordinate knowledge from forage breeding, forage management, grazing and livestock management, environmental sustainability and agricultural economics.

Applications are due by Oct. 15.

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) is applauding a recent RBC report that singled out agriculture as an opportunity for significant economic growth in Canada.

In response to the report, the group said Ottawa should reduce barriers to high skilled immigration to agriculture.

CFA said the government should also live up to its commitment to provide high-speed Internet to the remaining 1.5 million rural and remote households within 10 years.

The federation supports all of the RBC report’s findings, which include the urgent need for skilled labour and increased ag tech innovation.
