Ag in Motion grows in its fifth year

Jul 15, 2019 | 10:30 AM

Saskatchewan’s biggest outdoor show opens tomorrow northwest of Saskatoon.

Ag in Motion is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year.

General manager Rob O’Connor said the show continues to grow and this year is no exception.

“There’s 113 new exhibitors at the show that makes it 552 in total,” O’Connor said. “We expect with that we’ll have a larger attendance. There are more demonstrations, there’s more land with crop plots. The show continues to get larger.”

An additional 320 acres where purchased last year to create a field scale applied research farm which will show various crops and production treatments.

O’Connor said the livestock portion of the show has outpaced the rest by percentage. He said the livestock centre brings in another audience.

“There’s a lot of ranchers that come and see the different types of equipment, demonstrations and different products on display for the livestock industry,” O’Connor said. “Each day of the show we’ve dedicated one sector of the industry. For instance, Tuesday is dairy day, Wednesday is beef day and Thursday is bison day.”

All outdoor events are at the mercy of Mother Nature. O’Connor said they are an outdoor event that focuses on an industry that works outdoors.

“I think that farmers understand that if there’s little bit of rain things might get a little muddy. What we noticed with our sister show in Ontario is when it rains attendance actually jumps up because it gives the guys an opportunity to get off the tractor and come to the show,” O’Connor said. “There’s always things people want to see and learn. Even when there’s some rain in the forecast, I don’t think that will keep anyone at home.”

A thunderstorm brought heavy rain and hail to another popular outdoor event. Country Thunder cancelled a performance on Saturday night.

O’Connor said there are provisions if there is a severe weather event.

“We have an emergency plan in place if things get serious.” O’Connor said.

Ag in Motion is located on the south side of Highway 16 northwest of Saskatoon near Langham on Range Road 3083. It runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30p.m.
