“We’ve seen a huge boom in the ethnic population that use lamb as their primary protein,” Bigoraj explained. 

The cost of beef has also driven up lamb prices. During holidays like Ramadan, prices went up to about 4 dollars per pound live weight, for a 90 pound animal. 

“We’re really seeing some really good prices right now. In the ten years that I’ve been in the industry, this is the best the pricing has ever been.” 

The industry has also been seeing more young people involved, and he said there were over 50 juniors at the Humboldt event alone. The Sheep Development Board and Sheep Breeders Association AGMs in January are usually full of younger producers, according to Bigoraj. 

He recommended that anyone with interest in sheep farming visit the websites of those organizations, with contact information broken down by district.
